Chris turned 40 this month! February 6th. I had grand plans to take him and the kids on a suprise weekend away. I had a rental cottage all picked out, and a place to take him and send him on his very own biplane ride (complete with loop-de-loops if he wanted!). But it wasn't to be...we were all sick, he had a difficult statistics final on Monday, he had just come back from a business trip...and so on. It would have been more stressful than fun. But I do still owe him a biplane ride!
We spent the day simply, as is often the way it works out around here. We spoiled him with fancy meals, and he was King of the Castle for the day (well, he always is...but we tried to make it extra obvious!). He even got to wear a crown, haha! Unfortunately he had to work and study most of the day, but we got him to come out in the evening for some dinner and cake. And presents. :)
Natalie helped me with the cake. Here she is working on the crumb coat. Getting it just right!

And then here is what Jacob did to the cake while we let the crumb coat set. Looks like a vampire was in the house.

In case you were wondering how I knew it was him...

We made it a "Happy Birthday to the King" cake, complete with crown. Natalie wrote "the" all by herself!
Working with a pastry bag is tough!

Chris liked it. :)

Modeling his crown. It kept making us think of the "I'm the Wiz" episode of Seinfeld!

His cake, all lit up. See those two wine bottles on the right? Those were birthday presents from Sydney and if you look carefully you can see how she decorated the labels for him. She also got him a subscription to the Weekly Standard. From Natalie he got a new watch, and from Jacob a gift certificate to Home Depot so he could get a portable jack he's been wanting. From me, Office 2010. Believe it or not, that was at the top of his list!

Singing Happy Birthday

Blowing out his candles.
Jacob finally got an APPROVED piece of cake! Sydney wouldn't eat hers. She was scared of it. (Total side note: Her eating has gotten so much worse...)

Taking a few minutes to relax with some Wii and his cake. Then back to studying. He did great in the stats class, by the way!
Happy Birthday Chris! We love you!
