Sydney had her third session with the feeding therapist today. Second actual session, the first was an assessment. It was awesome...I love that woman! ;)
She got Sydney to eat peeled, sliced apples. Absolutely amazing. Right now the only fruits Sydney eats are freeze-dried strawberries, or apples prepared just the right way. That means a WHOLE apple, peeled on one side. She needs to hold the apple on the side with the peel so she doesn't feel the cold, wet part. But she doesn't want to eat the peel, so there has to be a peeled side for her to bite into.
Today the therapist used our Mr. Potato Head to help out. She had the parts Sydney wanted in the little opening in the back, but there were also peeled apple slices in there. So when Sydney went to get out the eyes, for instance, she had to navigate several slices of apple to do it. At first she would pull her hand back right away with a disgusted look on her face, and wipe it on her shirt. After awhile she started pulling the apple pieces out...I couldn't believe she was even holding them!
Then the therapist sat there with an apple piece in her mouth while Sydney played. When I showed Sydney what the therapist had in her mouth, she quickly took an apple piece and put it by her mouth too. Then her mouth was slightly open and she tried to push the apple piece in using her arm (with the sleeve covering her skin). She didn't mind it in her mouth, she just didn't want to have to touch it to get it in there! She couldn't really get it in that way so she eventually used her hand. She ended up eating 4 slices.
WOW!!!! To see her put a piece of apple (peeled! sliced!) in her mouth made my day. week. month!!! And this is only her third session. I can't wait to see what else we accomplish.
WAY TO GO SYDNEY!!!!!!
