I just opened today's mail, which contained a large envelope from Jacob's gastroenterologist. Turns out the blood test he had at their office revealed a few food allergies...
Looks like a moderate allergy to egg white (not to the yolk, though), low to cow's milk, and very low to wheat.
There were a few other things that didn't come back in the normal range, but I'll have to ask the nurse what they mean. If anything.
I'm waiting for a return call from the nurse....
PM UPDATE: Just spoke with Jacob's doctor, who kindly returned my call this evening.
He said we should eliminate the egg whites, that they are likely causing skin issues for Jacob. This makes sense...he complains about itching a LOT and also gets hives and rashes so easily (often for seemingly no reason). The doctor said there may be some GI issues too, it is hard to know. And Jacob can't tell us, either. So we'll have to remove the egg white and see what type of differences we observe in him.
As for the milk, the doctor said we should probably try to remove some/most/all of it and see what happens. There might not be any change, or we may see a big difference in how Jacob feels. Guess we'll give that a try after we see what removing the egg does...that way we can tell what's doing what!
Don't have to worry about the wheat, most likely. Whew!
He was slightly concerned that Jacob may be hypoglycemic, but that test will just be run again. Could have just been a delay getting the sample to the lab, or just what Jacob had eaten that day.
Jacob's white blood cell count was off but the doctor said that's common with the allergies. And also he had been sick a lot around that time, so there's another possible reason.
Looks like I need to do some research on egg-free recipes!
