Chris took Jacob in to his pediatrician today. He said that the stitches aren't ready to come out yet - he was worried that the wound could split back open if we did. So that means a return visit in a few days.
We also asked about scarring, and his doctor said that a vertical cut like that is going to scar more than a horizontal one. He suggested some vitamin E oil once the stitches come out. We are also going to check with our dermatologist to see if there is anything we can do to prevent scarring...we are hoping there is...
Jacob's also been complaining for a few weeks about pains in his feet, off and on. Since he's been learning the names of more body parts, he's been able to tell me lately that his HEEL hurts. The IA who accompanies him to school said he's been mentioning it occasionally there too.
Chris just mentioned it to the doctor today and after he examined Jacob's feet he said that he actually has plantar fasciitis - an inflammation to the "plantar fascia" which support the arch and run from the heel to toe. It is not common in children, especially as young as he is. But he does do an excessive amount of jumping, AND he has gained about 20 lbs in a year. So it makes sense...
I'm going to take him in to the local Good Feet store where they custom fit you for one of the hundreds of orthodic supports they sell. Hopefully he is not to small to find something that works. And I guess we'll be headed to Stride Rite where they can do a thorough sizing of his feet and we'll make sure he has some really good, supportive shoes to wear.

Mederma is amazing for scars. My dermatologist recommended it. I was amazed at how well it worked. It isn't cheap, but well worth the cost and a little goes a long way.
