Another moment with autism

Yesterday while watching the Superbowl, Chris was (of course!) yelling at the television. At one point, Jacob was in the kitchen with him and apparently thought Chris was yelling at him. He started to cry/fuss and you could tell he was upset because he didn't think he was doing anything wrong. And he wasn't! It took Chris some time telling Jacob in a soothing voice that he hadn't done anything wrong, he was just yelling at the tv, etc, before Jacob was convinced everything was okay.

This happens quite a bit in our house. Natalie might get in trouble for something and Jacob starts crying - again, he thinks our words are directed at him and not her. Or we might tell Natalie to say sorry or go to her room, and he will go running back to his own room, or tell us he is sorry.

It's made me very aware whenever I raise my voice, correct Natalie, etc...that he pretty much always assumes we are talking to him! And he really is quite sensitive to getting in trouble, so he gets pretty upset when he thinks he is being corrected unfairly.

I can only imagine what this is going to be like once Sydney is old enough to get in trouble too!!

Miguel use to be the same way at school or daycare. I had to remind staff to address the child by name, so Miguel didn't think it was him.

He isn't that way anymore. He is use to it now and I really don't think he cares anymore.
