Gymnastics

So Jacob apparently did really well at gymnastics on Saturday, in addition to a fantastic day Friday! I just spoke with the IA who accompanied him and here's what she said:

- There were a lot of new kids and parents in class this week - we're not sure if they were just enrolling a bunch of new kids or for some reason the actual class has changed and we didn't know it! Usually parents don't participate and Jacob is the only one who has anyone with him. But this time almost everyone had a parent along.

- One of the parents tried to explain to Jacob's IA (she must have assumed the IA was Jacob's mom!) that her own child has a learning disability and has some trouble listening to instructions, etc. Jacob's IA said that the mom was explaining it in a way that indicated she thought Jacob didn't have any issues and that she felt her own child needed to be explained for. The IA, of course, didn't say anything about Jacob having autism. I am thrilled, though, that the parent of another child with a delay didn't spot anything unusual about Jacob!!!

- A little girl (about Natalie's age) was behind Jacob in line and reached up and pulled on his shirt. He firmly said, "No thank you!" and she stopped. :) We need to work on some more typical responses...this probably would have been a better time for him to say "stop it" but still I am pretty happy about it!

- ALSO...in terms of actual gymnastics, he did great! They were doing testing this weekend and he was able to demonstrate a number of skills when asked, without any prompting from his IA. The coach was impressed, because in the past they have had to break down the skills. So for a seat drop, they had started off by saying, "jump-jump-drop" to him so that he knew what he needed to do. But now they can just say "show me a seat drop" and he does it without any type of prompting. Woohoo! So he was able to demonstrate seat drops, forward rolls, tuck jumps, and pike sitting - among other skills.
